David Keene, June 8, 2023 – A well-known analyst in our industry remarked on a webinar early this year that 2023 would be a “dumpster fire of AI claims” from every provider trying to jump on the bandwagon lest they be left behind. Indeed. The revolution is real (or it soon will be), but if you ignore the PR spinning dumpster fires, it’s more about the restart of chip innovation and increased computing power after a 10 or so year slowdown in real progress. (How many new generation laptops did you buy between 2010 and 2020? Few, because R&D was put to video games and graphics.) Nvidia is leading the way – they pivoted from games and video graphics hardware to AI chips, which tells a lot of the story. And we’ll see other huge players making their mark. AI at its core is about leveraging new gen chips to better do the math-intensive process of calculating machine learning algorithms. It’s hardware innovation first.
What does it mean for AV? Don’t get distracted by all the hype. Think content. How is AI helping the creation of better, more robust, more contextual and nimble content? Routine collaboration, and much of higher ed teaching, is day-to-day more about “live” content not playback of recorded content – but new tools such as AI-based PTZ cameras will help there. But let’s start in pro AV with the technology where you’ll first see AI-generated innovation: digital signage and its platform cousins. At its most ambitious this will be about AI to personalize and contextualize messaging in the field (such as retail stores, and EDU settings). Ideally – but we don’t know when – in retail specifically AI and analytics can help the retailer or brand compete with the ecommerce giants, enabling digital messaging inside brick and mortar to be as agile as Amazon.
At InfoComm we’ll see and hear a lot of AI hype, and some real solutions. On that latter note, check out Korbyt at InfoComm. They specialize in workplace management platforms. But how is that related to digital signage, you ask? They do digital signage anywhere, as well. And there is now a lot of real estate (and software solutions) in AV where collaboration and corporate platform management and digital signage overlap. Don’t take my word for it (and I have zero affiliation or relationship with the company). Check them out at InfoComm in Orlando. Here is there press release, sent to the press just a few hours ago:
Korbyt to Debut Machine Learning Broadcast at InfoComm 2023
New Machine Learning Capabilities in Korbyt Anywhere Platform Automate Digital Signage Content Delivery
Dallas, TX – June 8, 2023 – Korbyt, whose workplace communications platform gives employees easy access to organizational resources on any screen, anywhere, will unveil the company’s newest offering – Machine Learning Broadcast – at InfoComm 2023 (booth #908 in the Trailblazers Zone). Korbyt Anywhere Machine Learning Broadcast uses AI-driven camera optics and machine learning capabilities to dynamically adjust existing digital signage content by capturing engagement and dwell time data in real time.
“Managing and keeping digital signage content fresh has always been a challenge faced by digital signage network administrators, so we created a solution that does the job for them,” said George Clopp, Chief Technology Officer of Korbyt. “While much of the industry is busy speculating about how artificial intelligence and machine learning will impact the AV space in the long term, we’re focused on delivering solutions that positively impact the market today, giving businesses and other institutions the power to automate one of the most time-intensive aspects of running a digital signage network.”
Korbyt’s Machine Learning Broadcast utilizes cluster-based data mining algorithms to bring the same concepts used for product recommendation engines offered by sophisticated retailers to the everyday communicator. It dynamically adjusts the duration and timing of existing digital signage content, as well as finds and schedules new content to display based on optical data representing key engagement metrics.
Utilizing a variety of methods including computer vision, optics, user feedback, scheduling inputs, cluster data mining and business intelligence data, Machine Learning Broadcast dynamically adjusts the duration and timing of existing content, as well as finds and schedules new content based on this input. Content is classified utilizing metadata such as titles, descriptions and tags, then scheduled based on configurable orders in full-automation mode so the system can run hands-free. And as generative content continues to become more refined, AI will not only select existing content, but generate new content for display.
The Korbyt Anywhere workplace communications platform gives employees easy access to organizational resources. The powerful, Cloud-based CMS capabilities engage employees via a wide range of channels, including digital signage, desktop, email and mobile devices. With 1M+ endpoints, 250 cloud migrations and 100+ native integrations to-date, Korbyt Anywhere is the most advanced platform for engaging employees in the office and on the go.
In addition to demonstrating Machine Learning Broadcast in the booth, Korbyt’s presence will be felt throughout the show. The company will be participating in the AVNation TweetUp on June 14 from 4pm until 6pm Eastern, and will have demos in a number of partner booths, including BrightSign, Crestron and Sony.
